Dec 23, Amanda rated it really liked it Shelves: from-the-library , read-in , how-to-lady. Vintage hairstyles always fascinate me, and I feel hopeless when it comes to doing anything with my hair past brushing it or putting it in a ponytail.
I doubt I'll ever do any of these styles, but learning about how they're done is awesome. View 2 comments. Feb 03, Margie rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: swing dancers, hairstylists, retro divas. Shelves: costume , want-to-own , favorites. Absolutely wonderful. Extremely clear directions, perfect step-by-step photographs, tons of spot-on tips. I now know why my pin curls have previously turned out a bit wonky!
Rennells is very clear on why things are done a certain way. A valuable reference. I'm going to buy a copy and then have it spiral bound so that it lays flat. The only odd bit was a few errors that in olden days would have been referred to as typesetting errors - words that are run together, for example. This awesome book shows detailed steps to getting lovely vintage hair! I absolutely love the pictures and attention to detail.

Read this book many years ago when I dreamed of having this exact kind of style myself, doing my hair that way and buying the same kind of dresses. Never happened. Nevertheless, I still love this book to this day! Just scrolling through it and looking at the different ways of styling hair!
Jan 22, Intentional Goddess rated it liked it. I learned a lot from this book after being recommended it by someone who is in the industry. It is difficult without some context and general understanding of hair though. Moderate level. May 22, Angela rated it it was amazing. From the 20s right through the 60s, Rennells makes the construction of these daunting creations very simple. Her instructions are clear, and concise, and every step is photographed. She demonstrates the use of modern tools to build most of the styles.
But most impressive at least for me, was the expansive section on pin curls. Rennells demonstrates in finite detail the technique for a beautiful pin curl; and I can tell you, my hair has never been more beautiful and more manageably coiffed.
Thank you for helping me have spectacular and enviable hair. Mar 24, Timeandmotion rated it it was amazing. This is my favorite hairstyling book EVER.
It's very beautifully photographed with easy to follow instructions. She also goes into detail about some of the basics of hairstyling, especially the type of techniques they used back in those days, so if you're not familiar with them you don't have to worry. Even a lazy person like me who goes to the salon maybe once a year was able to make some really nice hairstyles. May 26, Iris rated it it was amazing. May 08, Rebecca rated it really liked it Shelves: non-fiction.
This is the most comprehensive book on hairstyling I've read. The section on pin curls is extensive and I finally understand pin curl pivot points and base placement.
I tried the victory rolls cover photo and got them in one try. I've never been able to do them before at all. May 31, Rebekah Lewis rated it really liked it Shelves: bibliographic , fashion , women , world-war-ii. One of the must-haves for the girl who's into retro fashions. Great guide to help you get the right look or just used as a historical resource! While there are beautiful detailed photos, at some points, the instructions are a little vague Dec 27, Michelle rated it it was amazing.
For anyone interested in hair styles from the s right up s than this is the book for you. There are pictures, lots of information on how to use tools and styling products. The best part is there is a great mix of styles for people with varying hair lengths.
This book has something for everyone. Jul 09, Sam rated it liked it Shelves: nonfiction , costuming-cosplay. One thing I wish the book had added was the "before" pictures, and then finished product photos to the tutorials in the "The Curl" section.
Otherwise, the book did a pretty decent job of showing how these great vintage styles were accomplished --although, I'm not sure I could do them by myself. I would definitely need some help!
Feb 19, Brianna rated it it was amazing Shelves: books-i-own. I am so entirely lucky to have this book! I will never sell it and probably never lend it to anyone. They may take a peek but if they so much as break the binding I will have to lose them as a friend.
That's how much this book means to me.
