LIGETI SIX BAGATELLES PDF

Magazine article Gramophone. Six Bagatelles. Chamber Concerto. At first glance, this minute disc bookending Gyorgy Ligeti's Chamber Concerto--a major work--with two occasional wind quintet pieces might feel a rather paltry offering compared with Ligeti's Chamber Concerto paired with the Piano Concerto and Melodien as part of Teldec's complete Ligeti Project, or DG's classic Boulez recording placed alongside Ramifications and the Second String Quartet. But, word to the wise, if you consider yourself a Ligeti aficionado, you need to hear these tour de force, cream-of-the-crop performances by Francois-Xavier Roth and Les Siecles. The booklet-notes don't specify how the ensemble's usual modus operandi of matching repertoire with historically appropriate instruments worked out here, but the group's keenly sensitive ears for timbre--honed in recent recordings of Stravinsky, Chabrier and Debussy--create performances of rare textural pliancy.

Ligeti's student Six Bagatelles connects back to that earlyth-century French neoclassicism with which, as it leans towards Dadaism, the ensemble are so familiar.

The opening Allegro con spirito might be the best Milhaud piece Milhaud never wrote, and Marion Ralincourt's laser-cutter flute and Helene Mourot's guttural oboe push for a more unruly spectrum of sounds than is customary in wind quintet playing. 6 Bagatelles [arr. from Musica ricercata] for Wind Quintet

The work was composed from to , [1] shortly after the composer began lecturing at the Budapest Academy of Music. Although the ricercata or ricercar is an established contrapuntal style and the final movement of the work is in that form , Ligeti's title should probably be interpreted literally as "researched music" or "sought music". This work captures the essence of Ligeti's search to construct his own compositional style ex nihilo , [3] and as such presages many of the more radical directions Ligeti would take in the future. In response to a request by the Jeney Quintet, six of the movements were arranged for wind quintet as Six Bagatelles for Wind Quintet An important global structural feature of Musica ricercata is that Ligeti confines himself to only certain pitch classes in each movement, with each subsequent movement having exactly one more pitch class than the last. The pitch classes found in each movement are as follows:. Following are brief descriptions with some analysis of each movement of Musica ricercata.
