If you are a seller for this product, would you like to suggest updates through seller support? Sigmund Freud evolved his theories throughout his lifetime.

This entailed many revisions and changes which he himself never tried to standardize rigidly into a definitive conceptual system. The need for some sort of a reliable guide which would spell out both the pattern of the evolution of Freud's thinking, as well as establish its inherent logic, was felt for a long time by both scholars and students of psychoanalysis. Laplanche and Pontalis of the Association Psychoanalytique de France succeeded admirably in providing a dictionary of Freud's concepts which is more than a compilation of mere definitions.

After many years of creative and industrious research, they were able to give an authentic account of the evolution of each concept with pertinent supporting texts from Freud's own writing in the Standard Edition translation , and thus have endowed us with an instrument for work and research which is characterized by its thoroughness, exactitude and lack of prejudice towards dogma.

The Language of Psychoanalysis has already established itself as a classic and will long continue to be of invaluable use to both student and research-worker in psychoanalysis. Read more Read less. Verified Purchase. The index offers a jump to the first page of each letter A-Z , but this means leafing through tens of pages by hand each time you want to look something up unless it happens to be the first entry for that letter. The content of the book is absolutely invaluable and it deserves five stars. Not the best quality, the book its really used. But the dictionary itself is amazing! One person found this helpful. Extremely happy, thank you.

Great book. It's the reference book to which all other books should be compared. The high water mark of scholarly activity. An astonishing achievement and an invaluable resource. Looking to purchase this as a gift - it's one of my wife's recommended books - I noticed shoddy German transliteration and I am not a psychologist nor do I read German that well - these words sprang out as unlikely.

Example: under Aggression they quote 'triebverschrdnkung' which should read That took me all of five minutes to spot. Not anal enough to proceed but I bet there's a lot more. This is not a cheap book. See all reviews from the United Kingdom. Top international reviews. Translate all reviews to English. In terms of the content, this would get five stars. It is the Kindle version that I am giving one star to. It is filled with typos, first of all.

But it is also very lazily done in terms of hyperlinking. I didn't especially want to get an electronic version of this, but since that was all I could affordably get, I thought at least the advantage would be that I could easily jump from one entry to another via hyperlinks.

But no. The index gives you the letter section A, B, C and then you have to click through each page until you get to the entry you want under that letter. It tells you when a term used has its own entry with an asterisk, but it isn't hyperlinked, which I think is the minimum you'd expect of an electronic encyclopedia.

Instead, you have to go to 'I' and click through 'idea', 'ideal ego', 'idealization', etc. It's ridiculous and lazy on the part of the editors.

Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again. Translate review to English. Psychoanalysis is a kind of science, very depending on its own terminology. The problem is especially delicate with translations from Freud's limpid German in other not-so-clear tongues, uttering their borborygmi under the immense and inert mass of dead languages.

Mental correlations are possible, of course, but the may be only conscious, and can fit very badly the science of Unconsciousness. This is why at least translations of the most successful vocabularies are necessary as the third party opinion in the seemingly never-ending dispute.

Exceptional reading and highly recommended! Load more international reviews. This book has useful key terms and explanations for any student of psychoanalysis or interested in psychoanalytic criticism. I would highly recommend it. Terrible OCR. The book is a must have for anyone studying psychoanalysis. But the kindle edition has awful optical character recognition erros.

Until it's fixed, I'll give it a 1 star rating. I definitely wouldn't recommend it, as it is, to anyone. You've read the top international reviews.
