ITINERARIUM EGERIAE PDF

Since the relatively recent discovery of the parchment reporting the incomplete narrative of a journey undertaken to the Holy Land, the text of the so-called Itinerarium Egeriae formerly known as Peregrinatio Aetheriae has attracted an amazing attention from scholars. Actually, the parchment, written at Montecassino and dated to the eleventh century, was found only at the end of the nineteenth century by Gian Francesco Gamurrini in the library of the Confraternita dei Laici in Arezzo. At the stage of its first publication, the incompleteness of the text, missing its first and last parts and affected by two large lacunae , generated many speculations. These mainly concerned the origin, the status, the social level and even the name and identification of the woman that featured in the text as the leader of the small group of pilgrims headed to the Holy Land. Actually, the text is a narrative in epistle style of the journey from a western province to Palestine and Mesopotamia.

But, really, maps are not here to provide us complete satisfaction. Collectively, these texts inform how we visualize a world we are no longer a part of, but which we frequently attempt to access. I am interested in Roman, late antique, and early medieval history, archaeology, topography and GIS, Digital Humanities, and the role of Classics in pop culture. My book, Trade and Taboo: Disreputable Professionals in the Roman Mediterranean, is out now from University of Michigan Press Fall, and looks at the lives of marginalized tradesmen like gravediggers and tanners.

Although the text displays admiration for eastern monks, it is only later tradition which makes Egeria herself a nun. The sole MS, apart from fragments, was discovered at Arezzo in The text is incomplete, but provides detailed information about the Church liturgy of Jerusalem and the holy places, as well as a record of the pilgrim's journey to biblical sites in the Sinai peninsula and elsewhere in the Holy Land, and to the monks and martyr-shrines of Edessa. The Itinerarium Egeriae: Mapping Egeria’s Pilgrimage On Candlemas

This new version of the late fourth-century diary of journeys in and around the Holy Land known as the Itinerarium Egeriae provides a more literal translation of the Latin text than earlier English renderings, with the aim of revealing more of the female traveler's personality. The substantial introduction to the book covers both early pilgrimage as a whole, especially travel by women, and the many liturgical rites of Jerusalem that Egeria describes. Both this and the verse-by-verse commentary alongside the translated text draw on the most recent scholarship, making this essential reading for pilgrims, students, and scholars seeking insight into life and piety during one of Christianity's most formative periods.
