He was, at first, an enthusiastic supporter of the revolution which saw Fidel Castro and his guerrilla army sweep the dictator Fulgencio Batista from power in January But Padilla soon began to take a more critical view of life in Castro's Cuba. Writers were warned as early as that their efforts should be directed towards supporting the revolution - "with the revolution, everything; against the revolution, nothing" was Castro's stark definition of their responsibilities. Throughout the s, there were many attempts to bring Cuban intellectuals into line. In , however, the judges in the national poetry contest decided to award their annual prize to Padilla's collection, Fuera del Juego Out of the Game , which contained such obvious revolutionary scepticism as the following lines: "The poet!

Heberto Juan Padilla 20 January — 25 September was a Cuban poet , and the center of the so-called "Padilla affair" when he was imprisoned for criticizing the government. His first book of poetry, Las rosas audaces The Audacious Roses , was published in His son, Ernesto Padilla , was born in Although Padilla initially supported the revolution led by Fidel Castro , by the late s he began to criticize it openly and in , he was imprisoned by the Castro regime.

From to and to , he lived in the United States. Under attack by the authorities, Padilla was imprisoned on vague charges in , which brought about vigorous protests by individuals, organizations, and governments. Many of those condemning the Cuban regime had been its supporters, and the controversy divided Latin American intellectuals and artists along party lines. In he also published a volume of selected poems, El hombre junto al mar , which later appeared in a bilingual edition Legacies: Selected Poems  , with English translations by Alastair Reid and Andrew Hurley.
