Truly an incommensurable urdu "novel", a manifold of: psycho-dramas, existential-encounters and philosophic-experiments, contrived in a comical "desi" settings, ready to haunt the reader with its bewitching absurdity.

It resided in my library for several years and only very recently I go an opportunity to read it after watching an interview with the author. I had an instinctive feeling that if the novel does have an academic and philosophical feel to it I may actually appreciate that as academic-authors have globally produced some distinctive works that I have enjoyed. Ghulam Bagh - the collection of ruins from various ages and its encircling modern buildings is physical space of pivotal importance to the story as well as a metaphor for time, history and heritage.

The protagonist Kabir Mehdi appears to be based on the author himself - both due to his philosophical bent as well as travails of becoming a novelist. There is really evocative description of the Pothohar plaeteau from where the author and indeed the protagonist hails.

While they have their moments in terms of sharpness of observation and wordplay, it found them rather difficult going. Admittedly they are meant to capture the elusiveness and difficulty of the creative process as Kabir Mehdi grapples with disparate ideas and inspirations and also explores the nature of his interest in and relationship with Zohra.
