Any doubts I had about it, vanished once I began reading it. To say it's well written and planned out is just the start. There is a tremendous amount of information in this book! The chapters are short, but they are full of valuable information.

Do not let the cover fool you into thinking this is a dry, academic book. It's really a very interesting and entertaining read. I also found the appendices at the back very helpful. I wish I had found this book sooner. I've just finished an article for an academic journal and this book would have been invaluable to me. However, armed with this little gem, I know my next paper will be even better! If you're a student or a writer you really need this book.

The information in it, I believe, could be used for any topic that requires research for writing papers. I can't recommend it enough! I agree with the previous reviewer. This is a great elementary book in how to write history but it has something for more advance writers as well.

In fact, my graduate level church history professor recommended it. However, my advice is to get the hardcopy book. I've been reading the Kindle version for the past week and have realized, that in many chapters, the second page of the chapter is "blank" and the third page does not continue from the first. I've tried to find the missing pages in "look inside" via Amazon with no luck, so I am now ordering the hardcopy.

So, if you want the book, save the Kindle cost and get the hardcopy. Jim Cullen's Essaying the Past is one of the most helpful books for anyone writing essays especially in an acedemic field.

I quote him even in my educational courses. I only wish he would have covered more areas and elaborated more.

Like Strunk and White , he precisely states what needs to be conveyed. I recommend this for any serious student in any discipline, not only historical writing. A short but effective and concise masterpiece on effective academic writing. This is a concise, effective guide for writing historical essays.

I am an undergraduate history student and found that it immediately helped my writing skills, and particularly how to organize thoughts and information. An easy and enjoyable read. Written in an entertaining but very useful format. I would recommend it to any history major that is attempting any paper. Go to Amazon. Back to top. Get to Know Us. Shopbop Designer Fashion Brands.
